एक नवयुवक था। छोटे से क़स्बे का। अच्छे खाते-पीते घर का लेकिन सीधा-सादा और सरल सा। बहुत ही मिलनसार।
एक दिन उसकी मुलाक़ात अपनी ही उम्र के एक नवयुवक से हुई। बात-बात में दोनों दोस्त हो गए। दोनों एक ही तरह के थे। सिर्फ़ दो अंतर थे, दोनों में। एक तो यह था कि दूसरा नवयुवक बहुत ही ग़रीब परिवार से था और अक्सर दोनों वक़्त की रोटी का इंतज़ाम भी मुश्किल से हो पाता था। दूसरा अंतर यह कि दूसरा जन्म से ही नेत्रहीन था। उसने कभी रोशनी देखी ही नहीं थी। वह दुनिया को अपनी तरह से टटोलता-पहचानता था।
लेकिन दोस्ती धीरे-धीरे गाढ़ी होती गई। अक्सर मेल मुलाक़ात होने लगी।
एक दिन नवयुवक ने अपने नेत्रहीन मित्र को अपने घर खाने का न्यौता दिया। दूसरे ने उसे ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी स्वीकार किया। दोस्त पहली बार खाना खाने आ रहा था। अच्छे मेज़बान की तरह उसने कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी। तरह-तरह के व्यंजन और पकवान बनाए। दोनों ने मिलकर खाना खाया। नेत्रहीन दोस्त को बहुत आनंद आ रहा था। एक तो वह अपने जीवन में पहली बार इतने स्वादिष्ट भोजन का स्वाद ले रहा था। दूसरा कई ऐसी चीज़ें थीं जो उसने अपने जीवन में इससे पहले कभी नहीं खाईं थीं। इसमें खीर भी शामिल थी।
खीर खाते-खाते उसने पूछा,
"मित्र, यह कौन सा व्यंजन है, बड़ा स्वादिष्ट लगता है।"
मित्र ख़ुश हुआ। उसने उत्साह से बताया कि यह खीर है।
सवाल हुआ, "तो यह खीर कैसा दिखता है?"
"बिलकुल दूध की तरह ही। सफ़ेद।"
जिसने कभी रोशनी न देखी हो वह सफ़ेद क्या जाने और काला क्या जाने। सो उसने पूछा, "सफ़ेद? वह कैसा होता है।" मित्र दुविधा में फँस गया। कैसे समझाया जाए कि सफ़ेद कैसा होता है। उसने तरह-तरह से समझाने का प्रयास किया लेकिन बात बनी नहीं।
आख़िर उसने कहा, "मित्र सफ़ेद बिलकुल वैसा ही होता है जैसा कि बगुला।"
"और बगुला कैसा होता है।"
यह एक और मुसीबत थी कि अब बगुला कैसा होता है यह किस तरह समझाया जाए। कई तरह की कोशिशों के बाद उसे तरक़ीब सूझी। उसने अपना हाथ आगे किया, उँगलियाँ को जोड़कर चोंच जैसा आकार बनाया और कलाई से हाथ को मोड़ लिया। फिर कोहनी से मोड़कर कहा,
"लो छूकर देखो कैसा दिखता है बगुला।"
दृष्टिहीन मित्र ने उत्सुकता में दोनों हाथ आगे बढ़ाए और अपने मित्र का हाथ छू-छूकर देखने लगा। हालांकि वह इस समय समझने की कोशिश कर रहा था कि बगुला कैसा होता है लेकिन मन में उत्सुकता यह थी कि खीर कैसी होती है।
जब हाथ अच्छी तरह टटोल लिया तो उसने थोड़ा चकित होते हुए कहा, "अरे बाबा, ये खीर तो बड़ी टेढ़ी चीज़ होती है।" वह फिर खीर का आनंद लेने लगा। लेकिन तब तक खीर ढेढ़ी हो चुकी थी। यानी किसी भी जटिल काम के लिए मुहावरा बन चुका था "टेढ़ी खीर।"
