लहरें गिनना - अकबर बीरबल की कहानी

एक दिन अकबर बादशाह के दरबार में एक व्यक्ति नौकरी मांगने के लिए अर्जी लेकर आया। उससे कुछ देर बातचीत करने के बाद बादशाह ने उसे चुंगी अधिकारी बना दिया।

बीरबल, जो पास ही बैठा था, यह सब देख रहा था। उस आदमी के जाने के बाद वह बोला- “यह आदमी जरूरत से ज्यादा चालाक जान पड़ता है। बेईमानी किये बिना नहीं रहेगा।“

थोड़े ही समय के बाद अकबर बादशाह के पास उस आदमी की शिकायतें आने लगीं कि वह प्रजा को काफी परेशान करता है तथा रिश्वत लेता है। अकबर बादशाह ने उस आदमी का तबादला एक ऐसी जगह करने की सोची, जहां उसे किसी भी प्रकार की बेईमानी का मौका न मिले। उन्होंने उसे घुड़साल का मुंशी मुकर्रर कर दिया। उसका काम था घोड़ों की लीद उठवाना।

मुंशीजी ने वहां भी रिश्वत लेना आरम्भ कर दिया। मुंशीजी साईसों से कहने लगे कि तुम घोड़ों को दाना कम खिलाते हो, इसलिए मुझे लीद तौलने के लिए भेजा गया है। यदि तुम्हारी लीद तौल में कम बैठी तो अकबर बादशाह से शिकायत कर दूंगा। इस प्रकार मुंशीजी प्रत्येक घोड़े के हिसाब से एक रुपया लेने लगे।

अकबर बादशाह को जब इस बात का पता चला तो उन्होंने मुंशीजी को यमुना की लहरें गिनने का काम दे दिया। वहां कोई रिश्वत व बेईमानी का मौका ही नहीं था।

लेकिन मुंशीजी ने वहां भी अपनी अक्ल के घोड़े दौड़ा दिये। उन्होंने नावों को रोकना आरम्भ कर दिया कि नाव रोको, हम लहरें गिन रहे हैं। अत: नावों को दो-तीन दिन रुकना पड़ता था। नाव वाले बेचारे तंग आ गए। उन्होंने मुंशीजी को दस रुपये देना आरम्भ कर दिया।

अकबर बादशाह को जब इस बात का पता लगा तो उन्होंने लिखकर आज्ञा दी, “नावों को रोको मत, जाने दो?”

उस मुंशी ने उस लिखित में थोड़ा सुधार कर टंगवा दिया, "नावों को रोको, मत जाने दो" और वसूली करने लगे।

अंततः बादशाह को उस मुंशी को सार्वजनिक सेवा से बाहर करना ही पड़ा।

After a short time, Akbar's emperor started complaining to the man that he was very disturbed by the people and took bribe. Munshi started taking bribe even there. Munshiji began to say to the brothers that you feed the horses less, so I have been sent to weave the lid. If your lad is sitting less in weight, then I will complain to the Akbar king. In this way Munshiji started taking one rupee according to each horse.

When Akbar Badshah came to know about this, he gave Munshiji the task of counting the Yamuna waves. There was no chance of bribery and dishonesty.

But Munshi ran his horse there too. They started to stop the boats that stop the boat, we are counting the waves. So the boats had to stay for two to three days. The pirates of the boat got fed up They started paying ten rupees to Munshiji.

When Akbar Badshah came to know about this, he wrote, "Do not stop the boats, let them go?"

The scribe made a little improvement in the writing, "Stop the boats, do not let go" and start recovering.

In the end, the emperor had to get that scribe out of public service.
