एक दफा शहंशाह अकबर ने घोषणा की कि यदि कोई व्यक्ति सर्दी के मौसम में नर्मदा नदी के ठंडे पानी में घुटनों तक डूबा रह कर सारी रात गुजार देगा उसे भारी भरकम तोहफ़े से पुरस्कृत किया जाएगा।
एक गरीब धोबी ने अपनी गरीबी दूर करने की खातिर हिम्मत की और सारी रात नदी में घुटने पानी में ठिठुरते बिताई और जहाँपनाह से अपना ईनाम लेने पहुँचा।
बादशाह अकबर ने उससे पूछा, “तुम कैसे सारी रात बिना सोए, खड़े-खड़े ही नदी में रात बिताए? तुम्हारे पास क्या सबूत है?”
धोबी ने उत्तर दिया, “जहाँपनाह, मैं सारी रात नदी छोर के महल के कमरे में जल रहे दीपक को देखता रहा और इस तरह जागते हुए सारी रात नदी के शीतल जल में गुजारी।“
बादशाह ने क्रोधित होकर कहा, “तो इसका मतलब यह हुआ कि तुम महल के दिए की गरमी लेकर सारी रात पानी में खड़े रहे और ईनाम चाहते हो। सिपाहियों इसे जेल में बन्द कर दो”
बीरबल भी दरबार में था। उसे यह देख बुरा लगा कि बादशाह नाहक ही उस गरीब पर जुल्म कर रहे हैं। बीरबल दूसरे दिन दरबार में हाज़िर नहीं हुआ, जबकि उस दिन दरबार की एक आवश्यक बैठक थी। बादशाह ने एक खादिम को बीरबल को बुलाने भेजा। खादिम ने लौटकर जवाब दिया, बीरबल खिचड़ी पका रहे हैं और वह खिचड़ी पकते ही उसे खाकर आएँगे।
जब बीरबल बहुत देर बाद भी नहीं आए तो बादशाह को बीरबल की चाल में कुछ सन्देह नजर आया। वे खुद तफ़तीश करने पहुँचे। बादशाह ने देखा कि एक बहुत लंबे से डंडे पर एक घड़ा बाँध कर उसे बहुत ऊँचा लटका दिया गया है और नीचे जरा सा आग जल रहा है। पास में बीरबल आराम से खटिए पर लेटे हुए हैं।
बादशाह ने तमककर पूछा, “यह क्या तमाशा है? क्या ऐसी भी खिचड़ी पकती है?”
बीरबल ने कहा, “ माफ करें, जहाँपनाह, जरूर पकेगी। वैसी ही पकेगी जैसी कि धोबी को महल के दिये की गरमी मिली थी”
बादशाह को बात समझ में आ गई। उन्होंने बीरबल को गले लगाया और धोबी को रिहा करने और उसे ईनाम देने का हुक्म दिया।

On one occasion, Shahansh Akbar announced that if a person lives in the cold water of the Narmada river during the winter season and remains in the cold water for all the night, he will be rewarded with a huge gift.
A poor Dhobi Dhar dared to remove his poverty and spent the night kneeling in the river and he got his reward from Jaina Panaah.
Emperor Akbar asked him, "How did you spend the night in the river, standing all night without sleeping? What evidence do you have? "
Dhobi replied, "Japnah, I kept looking at the lamp burning in the room of the river edge of the river all night and thus staying awake all night passed the cold water of the river."
The emperor became angry and said, "So it means that you take the heat of the castle and stand in the water all night and want reward. The soldiers lock it in jail "
Birbal was also in the court. It was bad to see him that the king is not only oppressing the poor. Birbal did not appear in the court on the second day, while there was an essential meeting of the court on that day. The emperor sent a Khadim to call Birbal. Khadim returned and replied, Birbal is getting cooked and he will eat it when he cooks.
When Birbal did not come too late too, the King saw some doubt in Birbal's move. They reached to confront themselves. The emperor saw that a long pole was tied to a pole and hung very high and a small fire was burning down. Birbal is lying beside comfortably at the nearby.
The king asked Tamakkar, "What is this spectacle?" Is it too much to cook? "
Birbal said, "Excuse me, Jayapnah, definitely sure. It would be as if Dhobi got the warmth of the palace "
The king understood the point. He hugged Birbal and ordered the release of Dhobi and reward him.
